Chicago has put Dr. Donda West’s name on the neighborhood that helped shape her family’s story.
A section of 78th Street in the South Shore area now carries the honorary designation Dr. Donda West Way.
The Sept. 22 ceremony brought together family, educators, community figures and Chicago hip-hop names including Ye, Rhymefest, GLC and Don C.
The strongest part of the tribute was the focus on West’s own life.
She taught at Chicago State University, chaired its English department, worked as a scholar and educator, and helped build the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing.
People who knew her also described a role that extended beyond campus.
Rhymefest called her a “village mom,” while friends from Ye’s early Chicago circle described a home where young artists were challenged, supported and taught to take both art and responsibility seriously.
The Chicago Sun-Times also reported memories of West’s business influence: helping formalize early business operations around her son and exposing young people around the family to real estate and money management.
That context matters.
Donda West is often reduced in popular music history to one relationship: Ye’s mother.
The street naming puts another record in public view — professor, scholar, mentor, businesswoman and a person who helped create space for a generation of Chicago creatives before the world knew their names.
