Houston is making sure BeatKing’s name stays attached to the city he helped soundtrack.
For the second year, August 29 was observed as BeatKing Day, honoring the late rapper and producer Justin Riley. The proclamation traces back to his 2024 Celebration of Life, where his daughters accepted the city honor in front of members of Houston’s music community.
The bigger story is why a city would keep doing this.
BeatKing built records for Houston clubs long before every local moment was expected to become a national trend. Across the Club God series and records like “Then Leave” and “Thick,” his music carried a sound people could place.
That is what regional legacy looks like. Not just streams. Not just one viral record. A city hears the music and hears itself in it.
