Jhené Aiko finally put a date on her next album.
Westside Whimsy arrives Friday, September 11, ending a six-year gap since her last full studio album, Chilombo, in March 2020.
Aiko had been teasing the title and visual world around the project for months. This week’s announcement turns that long build into a short final countdown.
The album has been taking shape publicly for months
The name Westside Whimsy began circulating earlier this year as Aiko shared artwork and references connected to the project.
She has described the music as tied to the feeling of California and the sounds and imagery she associates with the West Coast. In earlier comments reported by Complex, Aiko connected the project to 1990s music, car culture, surfing, beaches and road trips.
The album artwork continues that atmosphere with a close-up portrait of Aiko against a teal background and crystal-like tears across her face.
Six years after ‘Chilombo’
Chilombo became one of the biggest albums of Aiko’s career. The 2020 project debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, reached No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart and earned multiple Grammy nominations.
Since then, Aiko has stayed visible through singles, collaborations and performances, but she has not released another full-length studio album.
That makes Westside Whimsy less like a routine follow-up and more like a formal return to album mode.
The timing gives the announcement extra weight
The project is arriving with almost no traditional waiting period between the final release-date announcement and the album itself.
Rather than announcing a date months out, Aiko confirmed the project just days before it is scheduled to land.
