Nas added another major career honor Wednesday night in Los Angeles.
BMI presented him with its Icon Award at the 2026 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards, calling it the evening’s highest honor and recognizing his songwriting and influence across hip-hop.
The same ceremony named Kendrick Lamar R&B/Hip-Hop Songwriter of the Year. BMI said Kendrick was recognized for co-writing six of the previous year’s most-performed songs, including “hey now,” “peekaboo,” “squabble up,” “tv off” and “luther.”
“luther,” Kendrick’s collaboration with SZA, received Song of the Year.
Producer O Lil Angel was named Producer of the Year, and Sony Music Publishing received Publisher of the Year.
Nas Joins a Long BMI Icon Lineage
BMI’s Icon Award is not framed as a current-chart trophy. It is a career honor built around a songwriter’s body of work and influence.
With the award, Nas joins previous BMI Icon recipients including James Brown, Al Green, Janet Jackson, Nile Rodgers, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne and Babyface.
That list puts the Queens rapper’s writing career in a wider lineage than rap rankings alone.
Nas’ catalog has already moved through several eras: the Illmatic breakthrough, the commercial peak that followed, decades of catalog growth and a late-career run that kept adding new albums instead of treating legacy status like retirement.
The BMI recognition arrives with that full timeline in view.
Kendrick’s Current Run Was Recognized Too
The ceremony also created a useful contrast between legacy and current momentum.
Nas received the Icon Award for a career that has influenced generations of writers. Kendrick took Songwriter of the Year for work that dominated the most recent performance period.
BMI said “luther” also earned Song of the Year after a run that included 23 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
The award organization also recognized 35 of the previous year’s most-performed R&B and hip-hop songs in the United States.
This was not a night built around one artist. It was a snapshot of several layers of the songwriting economy at once: legacy, current hits, production and publishing.
The Producer and Publisher Awards Matter Too
O Lil Angel’s Producer of the Year honor reflected work that included collaborations with Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR, according to BMI.
Sony Music Publishing won Publisher of the Year after representing 27 of BMI’s recognized songs from the period.
Those categories are easy to lose underneath the artist names, but they show how many people and companies sit behind the records fans hear publicly.
A major R&B/hip-hop awards room can honor the performer, the songwriter, the producer and the publisher for different contributions to the same music ecosystem.
